Tamil is one of the ancient languages in the world. Tamil grammar Tamil people history in ancient days. It is not only a language, it is a culture with unique ethnical background. As per 2007’s statics, about 70 million Tamil people speak Tamil as native language whole over the world. Tamil is Dravidian Language which consists of other languages such as Kannada, Malayalam, and Telugu. 215 million people speak Dravidian languages. Today there are about 6500 languages in world . Anyhow population less than 1000 people are speaking 2000 of those languages.

As mentioned above, Tamil is one of the ancient languages in the world. It is one of the most spoken languages worldwide. Tamil-Brahmi letters are found in Adichanallur. These findings are for 500 BC. The same type of letters found in Samanamalai. These craving are 2200 years old. Researchers also claim that Tamil is 4000 to 4500 years old language. It is also classified as classical language.

Many caves and pottery have the proofs for ancient Tamil. These findings are about 300 BC old. These engravings are in Tamil Brahmi. Tolkapiyam defines the Tamil grammar rules. Above all it is the oldest belongs to 100 BC.  Above all Sangam which is a collection of about 2300 poems also found. Sangam is dated back 100 AD. Pandiyan Kings created Tamil Sangams where they did many researches on Tamil. Furthermore they also developed the literature and Tamil grammar. ‘Sweet sound’ is the meaning for the name, Tamil.

Tamil and Tamil grammar in Modern Era

At present Tamil follows Nannul for grammar in the modern era. Pavananthi Munivar wrote Nannul in 1300 AD. Anyhow Tamil at present undergone many changes. The main reason of this transition is due to the effects of colonization. Hence, this effects of European languages such as Dutch, Portuguese and English are reflected in Tamil in the grammar. Similarly it is also affected the vocabulary and changes of sound of Tamil as well. Similarly the negative conjugation and lower tone in high vowels are some of the examples. Conjugation describes the variation of the verb. This variation helps to identify the mood, number and tense of the verb. These days in Tamil language, the European style punctuation are very popular and common.

Tamil people and Tamil language

People use Tamil in work, media and in government regulations as well. Specifically Tamil is official language in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. People in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Sri Lanka, Kerala and Karnataka speak mostly Tamil. Similarly countries such as Andaman and Nicobar, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada and Mauritius also have massive population of Tamil people. Furthermore UAE, UK, USA, Saudi Arabia and Australia also have considerable number of Tamil community. These people follow their own traditions and mostly belong to Hindu ethnicity. They respect their culture and taught Tamil to their younger generations also. Many countries has unofficial schools on weekends to teach Tamil to young kids.
